I watched the film, MAX ERNST, a biography/documentary of Ernst's life. Ernst was an influential dadist/surrealist painter born in Germany, who lived in the U.S. for most of his life before returning to France.

At the end of the film, the artist makes a poignant statement, followed by a comment from the narrator:

A painter may know what he doesn't want, but woe to him, if he wants to know what he wants. A painter is lost when he finds himself.

The fact that he has succeeded in not finding himself is what Max Ernst considers his sole merit.
